Australian Electrical Certified Far Infrared Saunas
When people are initially considering an iHealth Far Infrared Sauna, the main focus is generally on the quality of our heaters, the unit and the warranty.
A hidden feature of the iHealth Sauna range is one that often goes unconsidered; however is often the most important: Our Australian Electrical Certification.
But why is it important to purchase a sauna with an Australian Electrical Approval? And what is the difference between an Australian Approval and other certifications?
This can become a little technical, however is very important to the safety of you and your family when choosing which sauna is right for you.
Why Certification is Important for your Sauna
Lets clarify what all of the confusing symbols actually mean:
The C-tick label indicates compliance with the applicable technical standards for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). All electronic devices must comply with EMC standards, however this does not relate to the standard with which the sauna is wired or the electronics are built. Products with very poor levels of wiring and electronic competency still pass EMC.
Restriction of Hazardous Substances
The RoHS directive aims to restrict certain dangerous
substances commonly used in electronics and electronic equipment. Chemicals like lead, mercury or cadmium. This provides us peace of mind in the materials used in the construction of the electrical equipment, however again does not relate to the safety of the electronic equipment used.
This is the most common symbol you see sauna companies using. This means the sauna complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation. This electrical standard is far below the standard required to pass Australian Electrical standards and does not hold up should an insurance claim be lodged.
There are many more symbols and abbreviations which very quickly become confusing.
With a bit of research you will notice that other sauna companies claim they have RoHS, or European Conformity, or a C-tick, however there is no company in Australia whose saunas are Australian Electrically Certified. This is because what used to be a broad Australian electrical standard has now been made specific for prefabricated far infrared saunas. In the past it was abroad specification that was not specific to far infrared saunas. The new standard AS/NZS 60335.1:2011 is highly specific to saunas, and due to increased restrictions and specifications, is very difficult to pass.
So what was involved and required for iHealth Saunas to become Australian Electrically Certified?
Every wire and connection throughout the whole electronic system is scrutinised. Each and every connection must pass strict flammability tests 10 – 11 times the operating capacity. Each wire needs to be double insulated. Even the plastic coating on the wire has to be a specific compound.
Australia prides itself on being at the worldwide forefront of safety. The sauna specification adopts an international safety standard, and then the standard is altered to what Australia believes is safe. For the iHealth brand and for infrared saunas, this means they altered almost every area of the international specification.
We invest a lot of time into the safety of our saunas and take it very seriously. The Far Infrared sauna market is highly unregulated, and cheaper companies take advantage of this, at the cost of the consumer’s well being.
A great example of this is the recent house fires related to people’s ‘hover boards’ catching fire. Upon further investigation, it was found these cheaper versions of the hover board were only electrically certified in their country of manufacture, not certified to Australian standards. People who experienced fires had decided to purchase much cheaper versions of the toy instead of paying $1000 for the original.

Australian electrical certification is something iHealth Saunas is extremely proud of, as it provides peace of mind for our customers knowing they are safe, and also that their sauna will rarely fault due to such high manufacturing standards.
